Now when it comes to answering the big question of why we need to revive the sports of pigeon Racing and how can this be easily achieved with less resistance, I am about to share my 2 cents worth of my inputs, just keep on reading as I am about to reveal it in this Blog post.

However, I’ve noticed recently that the sport is steadily declining in popularity and this is the main reason why I have decided to write this article to explain some of the important reasons why I think every responsible adult need to contribute and help to revive this wonderful pigeon racing sport.

Sure, we still see a plethora of websites about pigeon racing on the internet. But if you notice, none or only a few of them don’t go out on a limb to promote the sport at all. All we see are charts, racing results, pigeon auctions and obscure pedigrees.

All of these only serve to bore those people who have not been exposed to the hobby yet.

If we wish to promote the sport to as many people as possible, we have to begin focusing again on the things that led us to the sport in the first place.

The sport’s decline in popularity can perhaps is attributed to a lot of factors.

First, kids today have a short attention span.

This is why most of them tend to lose interest when they discover that racing pigeons takes a lot of time and effort. Children today would rather go to the internet and tend to their online farms instead. Or maybe the thought of taking care of pigeons is not their idea of being “cool”.

Here’s what I think. If we want to spark interest about pigeon racing as a hobby and a sport, an effort has to be made in regards to reaching out to kids.

After all, the fascination with pigeons is in its truest form in the eyes of a child.

Their minds are not subjected to corruption by the lure of money that comes with the sport, nor would they care much about a pigeon’s type of pedigree.

Children only care about the pigeon’s majestic appearance.

The beauty it emanates through its stark shades of aquamarine, and most of all, the grace displayed as it streaks through the sky.

I can feel pigeon racing professionals laugh in jest at this genuflection, and most importantly let’s not forget that most of us have been led to the sport because of these same reasons.

As someone who spent much of his childhood racing pigeons, I have learned invaluable lessons that I still find useful as an adult.

Raising Pigeons thought every individual who takes part on this sport to grow up as a responsible adult.

The sense of responsibility that one acquires in raising these magnificent birds is something that I’ll always treasure. Racing pigeons have also instilled in me a competitive fire that few of my peers can match.

The data gathering, the strict training program, and the meticulous feeding, etc. have all contributed to my sense of discipline. All these things played a big part in my success as a professional adult.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if your kids can benefit from the same hobby and in turn, make them better individuals as they grow up?

The Rules

The long and strict rules of this sport are attributed to the fact that it has been around for centuries.

The rules in pigeon racing mostly focus on ensuring that no racer cheats and that the fastest pigeon is awarded with the first place.

The rules of the sport, as set forth by the pigeon racing governing body, called the American Pigeon Racing Union, mostly covers significant rules regarding

• Your racing pigeons must follow the rules set, by the Union in order to compete fairly.
• How to calculate dead time, and
• How the pigeon racing is being timed correctly.

Now let me share with you some of the most important rules every beginner fancier who want to learn more about racing pigeons should know:

Each race must start at the same location at the same time.

A racer needs to provide proofs that he is, indeed, the owner of the pigeon. Each competing pigeon must be healthy and should wear a racing band. Each pigeon must return to its loft at the end of the race. Otherwise, it is disqualified. The shortest distance possible for each official race is no shorter than 75 miles.

Timing:

Each race is timed using electronic band scanning clock systems. Each of the clocks used throughout the duration of the race should run at the same time. Participants should provide proper labeling of their timers.

Participants are required to use properly working timers. The timers should have clear time stamps and should be easy to read. Timers used in the race should print the time the birds return to their lofts.

Dead Time:

For extremely long races, a dead time may be called for. Usually, the dead time is used to close the race during the night. This dead time begins 30 minutes before the official sunset and resumes 30 minutes before the official sunrise in the area where the race is being held.

During this time, the clocks are stopped. Not all races use the dead time though. There are organizations that continue the race during nighttime without calling for the dead time.
